Producer Information
Blue Nun is an historic wine brand from Germany. It has been associated for much of its history with a single, semi-sweet Liebfraumilch wine, but today encompasses a range of styles from several countries. The brand was first launched in the early 1920s by H. Sichel Shne of Mainz as a consumer-friendly wine without the long, complicated name usually associated with German wines. Blue Nun was extremely popular in the USA and UK from the end of World War Two, throughout the 20th Century. By the mid-1980s, two million cases were being sold internationally each year, with 750,000 of these in the USA. There, the wine is strongly associated with a long-running 1970s promotional campaign featuring Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. By the 1990s, this easy-drinking, sweeter style of wine was declining in popularity. In 1996, Sichel was bought by Langguth of the Mosel, who changed Blue Nun's makeup from Mller-Thurgau to a drier blend with 30 percent Riesling, and upgraded it to QbA. The wine remains at a lower alcohol level of around 10 percent abv (alcohol by volume). Both the Authentic White and the varietally labeled Riesling wines are produced from Rheinhessen fruit. As well as the Riesling, the Blue Nun brand has also been extended to include numerous other labels. The range now encompasses a Gewrztraminer (sourced from the Pfalz), a bag-in-box Rheinhessen Rivaner (Mller-Thurgau), as well as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon labels produced under the IGP Pays d'Oc classification in southern France. An alcohol-free red and white are also produced, both from German fruit. A Blue Nun 22K Gold Edition containing gold flakes was launched in 2009, and is now one of a number of sparkling wines in the portfolio. The company also makes a pair of sweet wines: one a ros from Spain and the other a white Eiswein made from Rheinhessen fruit. The range has also included Dornfelder, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir wines. The majority of Blue Nun wines are off-dry or medium sweet, with only the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot at the drier end (each with around five grams per liter of sugar).
