The 1st Space Operations Squadron (1 SOPS) is a unit of the United States Air Force (USAF) operating under the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Established on October 1, 2006, it assumed responsibilities from the 21st Space Operations Center and the 556th Network Operations Group.The primary role of the 1 SOPS is to provide on-orbit spacecraft control, command, and communication for the Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) constellation, as well as other Department of Defense (DoD) satellite systems. It plays a critical part in maintaining secure communications and ensuring the reliable operation of military satellites that support various DoD missions, including navigation, early warning, weather forecasting, and missile defense.The squadron's operations are conducted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with shifts manned by highly skilled airmen who monitor and control the satellites from the Command and Control Center at Schriever Air Force Base.
